A Review of “Christology: A Global Introduction by Veli-Matti Kärkkäinen"

Veli-Matti Karkkainen, Finnish associate professor of systematic theology at Fuller Theological Seminary, is known as the author of Introductions to Ecclesiology and Pneumatology. Kärkkäinen served as president and professor at IsoKirja College in Keuruu, Finland. He has taught and lived with his family on three continents: Europe, Asia (Thailand), and North America (the U.S.) He has also lectured and served as visiting professor in various schools around the world. He has also visited CTS - Continental Theological Seminary.

Now in his book Christology: A Global Introduction, Kärkkäinen offers a four-part introduction to Christology. On this review our focus centers over the first 3 sections, covering Kärkkäinen discussion on Christ in the Bible, Christ in History and Christ in the contemporary World: Western Christologies.

Summarizing thoughts first from Christ in the contemporary World: Western Christologies section, as Kärkkäinen is mostly known as a well travelled theologian. This section deals directly with materials from said classics by Barth, Bultmann, Tillich, Rahner, Moltmann, and Pannenberg, this sections also gives clear the understanding of the Eastern Orthodox theologian Zizioulas, also presenting the Christologican understanding of the Anabaptist Kraus, the evangelical Grenz, and the well known and tagged pluralist Hick.

With the section being so loaded with various names and their discussions on the subject of Christology, one might expect more pages of comments, discussions or the like but that is not the case here. Starting with the section for the review also allows one to state from the onset that this book is not a full critical discussion on Christology but rather an over view presentation of the various key views in this area. Would you agree? That if the author wanted he could have developed the thoughts of this cited writings further or like some writing have it, Kärkkäinen would have focused in on one view point or an author’s composition for the entire section but rather he clearly presents the views in the most possible flow while leaving the readers to explore the sources and firm up their convictions on Christology.

Christ in History which leads us tot the section in which Kärkkäinen persents with brief comments, surveying the history of the church and of church doctrines, starting with the early Christological disputes and debates that went through time, Kärkkäinen follows the track of Christ in History until the quest turns for the historical Jesus. From this writings one can perceive his personal views not that he may want to fully show this as Kärkkäinen is may keen on keeping his book as friendly to all as possible. In this section one can see a high attention given to the views of Luther then a summary on Thomas Aquinas and Calvin.

From this section on Christology one can be well established in a start of research into Christology, with Kärkkäinen writing one has a guide or a good research outlined, not the conclusions of the various view but only a spring-box to research. Which brings the question to who is this author aiming primarily and to what end was his hope that the book we serve in life and faith of readers and the Christian faith. One is grateful for his research and introduction to the subject of Christology.

With the opening section on discussed in this review one is simply presenting the very selective overall view one gets from reading this book, Kärkkäinen is a gifted writer and has a rich amount of research to his writing on Christology but one is left to explore to what extent does the Word of God stand in the presentation and thoughts of Christology? With as said a very selective discussion on names, titles and themes of who Jesus was and is through the gospel and Pauline writing the first section of Kärkkäinen writing is given in short.

Without exploring any specificity of Christology in the Bible, Kärkkäinen gives the briefest of summary on Christ in the Bible which one can see is not all the area of the Bible, sadly it is not ever a full New Testament consideration and view of Christ that is being presented. Dealing with the many faces of Christ in New Testament Bible section, especially in the Gospels and in short peek on Paul's letters. Various New Testament studies are quoted or refereed.

From this review and consideration one is left to wonder how little a role false theologian can allow the word of God to take root in their works, if one can determine that from this book of Kärkkäinen that is it important to know what ideas are out in balance to the scripture, it will be right to say it is a sad sight. How can many write on Christ Jesus - the word and leave the pages empty of the Word of God. This book has a rich resources recorded for our learning, research and example. It must be said that many theological writings as in the field of Christology that we read does not minister by the wisdom of the God’s Spirit to the readers directly.
From this book - Christology A Global Introduction one is well informed and given an effective outline for further research on the subject. Recommendation is since this world is already filled with non edifying views on many subject including that of Christology, Spirit led believers must not add to that trend but rather sow seeds of Truth-knowledge for edifying and giving life.

Keeping a Good Memory

Sitting in the winter/spring warm sun brings thoughts of gratitude, we are a people of gratitude and naturally we enjoy these thoughts and celebrate them, of course this celebrations are not kept to self but they are an open invitation to have others join in the feasting on the best there is.

Appreciation of the Master that has my life in His hand and how beautifully He uses my days. Days where life was a class-art presentation of the beauty and glory-excellent, where a young mind was guided in the miraculous and the spiritual was much more fun than the seen world. This boy of God still thinks back and expresses the most heartfelt gratitude for victories won in the spirit that gave and secured this life.

Was it from the dream where one saw his own end to the the actual event where this life was saved, the physical body carry the signs today. For this time and the many others am grateful, living the life of the Word, “...you shall not die but live to declare the Word of the Lord”. Gratitude expressed as Truth-Knowledge: that as we hold onto the Word of God which is our life and our guarantee for Eternal bliss.

One can think of many of these such events of glory, like in recent years one remembers walking the hills of Edinburgh and the state was made “I live here” to the outstanding expression of glory and life eternal that was, is and will always be. Very grateful for all this because of the people one has met and shared this path with, while there is much ahead, we who are good received do well to also 'keep a good memory' as this is a bed rock for our faith which is leading us from glory to glory until we blast our of this realm.

summing thoughts

Often people check their paths of life, and examine their motives in the life of worship they lead, this is what we consider, one checks his motives, attitude and priorities in leading others as well as living an accurate life of worship. While being very clear and honest in taking on the integrity of the image of a leader, questioning every non-scriptural style base and predetermination's that leaders are using in attempts to determine people responses, almost to say leaders base their success of their leadership on the responses from a gathering; only on the visibly response of the saints at that time, expecting nothing after and not encouraging a respond that goes beyond a self obsessed, emotional show.

What we learn from is a lesson that God by His Spirit has be recurrently clearly stating to us by various means, calling us to true honesty and high integrity, not that our gathering and worship expressions should not have emotion movement, or physical responses but that beyond these there is more to this wonderful life of worshipping God. We must have a focus and keep that focus scriptural! The worse day in a life could be that day of Jesus appearing, if He says to one you preform and expressed emotions in my name but I don’t know you, why because this one knows not the Christ, I pray this be the portion of no one in Jesus Name.

This is Simple and must not be made to seem complicated, worship is first and utmost spiritual, there are physical responds that must only follow the suit of the spirit with in tune and in sync with the Holy Spirit, this is done only by attention to the Word of God, there is no other way. Attention to the Word is what is needful, without Faith it is impossible to please God and Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Our lives of worship Must be by the spirit and the truth; meaning simply by the Holy Spirit and the Holy Scriptures, for which we are eternally grateful to God for giving.

Finally all the experiences and stir of the spirit in worship expressions with it’s emotion effect means Nothing if souls are not being reached by the ones experiencing this, the Only reason we are still here on earth is to reach other in love, this must be the ultimate physical outcome of our worship life and expression, A beautiful example of this is given us in the prophetic book of Ezra.

“presence to presence communication”

Our article points out a very unique and true way of worship, which differs from the most popular forms and activities associated to worship in our day. Here the focus of worship is the person of Jesus, worship as to be in His Presence, humbling ones self in reverence and awe, to make obeisance and pay homage to the new born King. The worship this article points out began from/with the plan of the Magi's, their journey was part as well as their time in the presence of Jesus Christ as a baby was all one worship expression.

A number of things we learn from this expression of worship, first one can clearly state that worshiping of God is not solemnly limited to songs. But that raises the question; why was this worship expression of the Magi’s so very important? That the Spirit of God presents it to us in scriptures, for not all who worshiped Jesus has a scriptural record of their expression. The answer to this question lies in the understanding of Who God really is, God is a Spirit and God is Love, so in our expression of worship as we pay homage not by mere physical means but from and by the spirit unto God. Scriptures states that God looks at the heart. Our heart/spirit intentional obeisance, reverence and awe pleases God more than all the words in all languages in songs, God is Spirit.

On the physical aspect of worship expression, as our spirits sour in awe of God our physical being reflects this and follows in suit, this does not have a single style or format. To imagine this we picture a baby crying alone in a room, the mother walks very gently into that baby’s room and the baby is relieved and go off to sleep, if this loving mother step out one moment before the subconscious of the baby takes over this baby again begins to cry. This here is “presence to presence communication”, as important as word and actions are, we give away something so powerful that travels in the air, this love, awe and reverence come from our presence and acknowledge as well the presence of God in and with us, now this is worship by the spirit beyond religion this is beautiful reality.

This article covers the area of lives, which reflect the half mindedness of songs and the place of distraction in which many find themselves many a times. These times where the flow is that folk are following songs at a church gathering or while one is on their own, while the person just follow without full heart engagement. Pointing out that at all time, the spirit of the believer must be intentional sync with the songs or any form of adoration in relations to God.

From this intentionality and heartfelt conciseness of worship, we not only experience God personally in our rooms, homes, streets and together in church gatherings, we place ourselves in our true and rightful place, where as we express worship to God, His power moves in us and through us, this is of the most beautiful experience of God. Where with songs we allow our spirit the thrill of fellowship with the Holy Spirit from the inside out and soon the Power is so mightily stirred that our environment is charged with the divine, tangible presence of God, and our step and way of life reflects the Glory as we are at such times (which should be always) we reflect the very glory of God, We being His marvellous light in display.

We consider this topic based on the thought of God being Love-1 John 4.16, God is Love by nature and character, not that God is just loving beyond that God is Love and this is the beauty of the knowledge of God, as to know God is to truly have life. Genesis 1.26 tell us that we are made in the image and likeness of God, to have the mastering over the world and all there in.

This is so wonderful to know, that we are the love child of a Love-God and Romans 5.5 tells us the condition of our depth is Love spread aboard in our heart by the Holy Spirit. So our lives in attitude of heart, conciseness, speeches and actions are of Love, altogether Love to the point of loving those that set themselves against us or persecute us-Matthew 5.44, as Jesus perfectly exemplified for us in His time on earth, Loving even unto those that were not kind or nice which includes us as Jesus died for us while we were yet sinners-Romans 5.8.

Based on this revelation of who God is and who we are in Christ, we ought not only to love all men, we do love all people and treat they as precious as can be not only in expectational that we will be treated likewise, but ever is that is not the case we still love and treat people righteously because of the love of God that is deeply spread aboard in our heart by the Holy Spirit, this is our super ability and enablement in the Holy Spirit.

Just as we mentioned above; many times others don’t follow suit in doing to you are you have done unto them and would like them to do unto you, Leonard Sweet discusses this in context of Joy filled living. What he wants to is to walk through life in Joy, but others seems to drum the joy out and then the golden rule is not so solid, in the face of society short coming, also as seen with “customer-driven corporate mentality” where the code is ‘do unto others as others would have us do unto them’ therefore one needs and goes by a higher code².

While on explorations of world religions, one finds that seed of God in men in their search for God, in the book What Difference Does Jesus Make; the findings shows that centuries before Jesus, Confucius said it in this manner; “Do not do to others what you do not want done to yourself”³, it seems already rooted in man, but why did Jesus say the same but in an assertive way? What did Jesus mean? We see in the growth of revelation, first Jesus said ‘treat others as you want to be treated’ then after He lived among the people and showed how it must be done He then said; “Do unto others as I have done unto you” this is the current hour Truth of God. Based on this we live our days as taught and shown in the word of God changing this world with love.

Worship as Defined
With our growing knowledge of God, our worship experiences, that is beyond play times and show off; we are enjoying glory in the beauty of His presence, in which we dwell, with the unmistakable manifested presence of His highness in our lives through the spirit.

Worship is not at all limited with Music during the shared time together, in church gatherings, cell group meetings or wherever, the beauty of ministering with music is that with participation, all present can experience the bliss of glory that is given in fellowshipping together, this is where the power of the miraculous is strongly present and received with ease by Faith.

Technologies

As to do with technologies, these are tools to serve in the participation and sharing together. The focus remains; Togetherness, with wisdom we are better using these tools, ensuring they are not becoming a distraction in any form, also in our use of tools we are not taken by the tools but our focus and full attention remains on our King to whom we gather with joyful laughter on the limitations of technologies which we go beyond by constant use of the Holy Spirit gifts in worship.

The Knowledge of God
All of these are based, founded and refreshed by the Word of God that is in us, for without the preaching, teaching, receiving and speaking out of the Word we are unable to really know God; or to enjoy God or worship God in a way where the worship is acceptable as inspired by the Word which is most Needful. Jesus said to Martha “One thing is Needful” and Mary has chosen this, and no one will take it away from her.

Worship with Integrity in the face of cultures

This Divine Culture in which we live is different, in recent year the attacks on Christian integrity has mostly arisen from believer's in Jesus Christ wanting to think of themselves as same with non-believers, wanting to live the divine life and yet say ‘we are all the same’ such statement and intentions are false as seen in the responses of the world in calling Christians “hypocrites”. We are in this world but not of the world, in reaching the world the Holy Spirit showing His presence in believers made people call Christians names in their misunderstandings

Felt need verses Real Need
How can music style of church gatherings be so driven to fit pre-christian (unbelievers)? This question is key as worship in every form comes from the received revelation of who God is, which moves our spirit to awe devotion. Without reading too much into what Jesus said and how He used parables, one can firmly say when seekers heard Jesus they mostly walked away without getting Him or His message totaly, even Jesus’ disciples would often feel the same, as seen in their coming later to question Jesus on the true understanding of what He said and taught. One is learning here that in our desire to reach many which is our primary mandate and life destiny as believers; we must not lose or leave out the awe of God, as to know God is to know this revelation of awe in the deepest respect that leads to whole heart adoration's

Task at Hand
Rather than whatever is been tried and carried on from church to church as exchanges of best tips in reaching the present cultures, cultures which are always changing based on whoever the majority are following, we just follow what Jesus said and has asked of us;
“...Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.”
Matthew 28:19-20.

We the fruits of the New Testament who worship God in Spirit and in Truth have the exciting joy to be able to serve God with every area of our life and existence as worship. In the past this worship took expression in arts, hence the many beautiful Roman Catholic Church buildings around the world, to date all who are attentive and fans enjoy these.
In the recent years the body of Christ seem to have left arts out of our awe devotion to God as we live in His presence, the result of such separation is visible in the corruption that is so called art today.

Hope remains true regardless of time, as hope lead not to shame because the love of God is spread abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit, in this tone we rejoices to see the present investment in arts in the Church of the Transfiguration, here awe devotion of Love is expressed in every area of this gathering center, prayer is that such excellence will carry on and over in our revere of God, taking expression in arts as well as other forms, that we the glory of God will display His Excellencies to His delight as our worship.

Following our strong call to intentionality and right speech;

“...If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body”. James 3:2

We consider the details of what the worship life and church life is now all about that bought this call, from deep to deep. Our consideration is that of the life of saints (interview discussion based in a US context, yet accepted as the US church body still highly influences the church). Items bought up are that of the lack of awe-glory to the life of saint, lack of theology of purpose, theology of legacy and so on.

This short interview article covers a good amount of ground, calling for a more glory life, not a human systematized way of things in technologies and step methods but rather the leading of the ever indwelling presence of the Lord in us by the Holy Spirit, which then lead us to live rich life's of glory as we have been called to.

That our days are intentional and directly by the truth of God’s Word personally and regularly refreshed in prayerful studies and application, that this lead us in the path of God’s purpose for us as we journey on earth;

“...a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a dedicated nation, [God's] own purchased, special people, that you may set forth the wonderful deeds and display the virtues and perfections of Him Who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.” 1 Peter 2:9 AMP

Heaven in You

On the unintentional thoughtless diction of many saints sadness rage, strong, in their lives and spiritual experiences, attention to the Word of God as needed is not given, scripture are the only perpetually powerful component of our world yet not many saints are keenly attentive.

"The entrance and unfolding of Your words give light; their unfolding gives understanding (discernment and comprehension) to the simple." - Psalm 119:130 (Amp)

Taking the beautiful example of King David, already many love the Psalms, but a more attentive reading will highlight these, all the Psalms no matter the content or how it starts, they always emphasize Who God is, What God Has done and the Position of God. Many song writers, pastors and saints are inspired by the writings of King David, the wisdom of all the psalms is only but the celebration of the Word of God, to see, do and respond to all things God's way. May none be unwise and take their our way;

"There is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death." Proverbs 14:12

This article we consider paint an image for us that helps us truly consider these thought in a context of worship, as too many are unintentional and thoughtless in their way, deeply troubling is that these ones are the voices many follow in the Christian Faith, eg; a prayer as this is given before a round of song, 'Lord we now come into your presence to give you praises...' question is "where have you been?". It's our hope and prayers that our intentional attentiveness will be given to the true things, not to the unintentional thoughtless distractions that flies in the air.

“The rain and snow come down from the heavens
     and stay on the ground to water the earth.
  They cause the grain to grow,
     producing seed for the farmer
     and bread for the hungry.
It is the same with my word.
     I send it out, and it always produces fruit.
  It will accomplish all I want it to,
     and it will prosper everywhere I send it.

     and the trees of the field will clap their hands!
Where once there were thorns, cypress trees will grow.

           In current times we at great advantage, not only has others gone before us but their legacy in this area is to our benefit. The scripture above gives us our context for thinking on the role of the Holy Spirit, firstly we note that the spirit gives Life, this same spirit that gives life is the one who moved anointed men to write the scriptures in the first place, from time past we learn that that All who gave attention to God’s spirit in the interpretation of Scripture walked in the word and in the glory of God in this life as a result. Recognizing the awesome and unique role of the Holy Spirit with Scripture brings about the expectation needed in faith to receive what the word says.

           With all human wisdom, knowledge and understanding the key still is the Holy Spirit in His unique role, where he brings to our hermeneutical studies; Confirmation, Correction and Conviction of the Truth of God’s word which is what the Lord requires of all who worship Him, we must worship in Spirit and in Truth (Jesus speaking in John 4). Finally we learn that the Holy Spirit carries and gives the power of God for witness , our studies ultimately is to bear witness of God in the world, as we have been give the Ministry and Message of Reconciliation and to do this we must follow in the steps of Apostle Paul preaching the gospel with the Spirit and the Power of God.

Day 7: Love is Kind

… Love is kind. (I Corinthians 13:4b)

We are the Body (1), the expression of Love which is the kindness of God the Father of Our Lord Jesus Christ (2). As the Body each day we live out kindness in love as the fruit of our recreated human spirit (3), for we live, move and have our being in Christ Jesus (4).

This is made possible as we have the divine God life supplanted in our human life (5). We see the same expression in our Father from Genesis as in kindness he created clothing for Adam and Eve. In addition all the way through the Bible Library, we see Love function naturally in Kindness.

Yes, we have a choice in expressing ourselves as kind as we are birthed in the truest and purest love that is of God our Father: Whosoever does not love does not know God because God is love (1 John 4:8).

Today as always, you go about and your spirit communicates with you that you show forth your true self which is kind and in following the voice of your spirit you enjoy the fulfilments thereof (6).

A Prayer for Today:
Many Thanks Father God that you made me in love,and that I display your personality each day in being Kind.
In the name of Jesus, I choose with my spirit to fully live friendly, warmhearted as I am natured in Christ.

After about a week on this trip, outting off everythings on the to
dolist which truth be gold-was one thing; that check departure time on
Ticket.

2:45pm on the 13th it is then, put away the ticket determine how to
pack and what stays behind now relax.

It's the 13th, awaken by the thought of "the greatest one' taking deep
interest in me". This brings with it a sense of calm and soulfulness,
hurry is out of the picture, no pushing the time limits is theme.

Okay, all packed and ready off we go, there is a pluse a longing to
pray-so that is what I do, walking about praying and being open to
hear, see and receive.

Now off to drop the keys to the flat. A strong longing to pray-see;
the ticket time. The bag is open eyes set on to look at departure oh
it not 2:45pm as held on to till now It's 2:15pm, current time check
follows it is already 2pm. Drop the key and start out as quick as can
be with the heavy bag on the back and small handbag in hand. Thinking
what is the quickest route to getting to Nord Station.

Now in the sub-way route picked and confirmed. It's now 2:10pm a new
pray is said Please "dearest Father hold the bus for me I don't want
to miss the bus"while thinking please no I can't buy another ticket-no
way, please expence account has been marched and surpassed already.

Off the Sub-way, up the automatic stairs on to the flar automatic
forward moving stair, take a breath then on to the team station a
little wait the on the tram arriving at North Station. Time check:
2:30pm, Thought check:Not too bad just a 15mintues wait and Spirit
reponds "I have what I asked for no second guessing or forming a
different plan!" Lips Check:A pray of thanks followed with depth
truths expressions.

Off the tran up the stair fast pace to the buses I see the first is
yes right to London, the driver returns, with a surprise smile then
direct look says no"am off now am late" please just 5mins I plead "no
mind the doo"r he said as he drives away

Went to check in desk, turn in my ticket "oh you just missed the bus"
he said please when is the next one I asked 10:45pm he said, please
how much is that?

He takes my ticket, works on the computer, writes on my ticket then
stamps it and I am to take the next bus with the same ticket. Be here
he added, smiled said Thank you I will just stay here and walked away.

What details are you living out in your prayers? Do you see the bus
waited but what more should U have asked? It rocks to have the
Corformer look and you heart thoughts and pray rightly for you. "You
may miss this just so you enjoy more grace"

After New Year celebarations, 4 hours wait in Time Square, still got a very good spot. Talked. Ate, Sang, danced with of shouting till the hour changed.
